"I don't have a lot of IRL friends that play games," one Discord user, who goes by Mikeyy on the platform, told me. Its tagline was not subtle: "It's time to ditch Skype and TeamSpeak." It had text chat, which was cool, but mostly it did voice chat better than anybody else.Įarly users set up private servers for their friends to play together, and a few enterprising ones set up public ones, looking for new gamer buds. As luck would have it, in early 2015, a new tool called Discord showed up on the market. Their gaming friends were their real friends. They wanted to talk to their gaming friends even when they weren't in a game, and they wanted to talk about things other than games. They mostly hated TeamSpeak and Skype, but they were really the only options.Įventually, a lot of those gamers realized something. They liked playing video games, and liked playing with their friends, so they used TeamSpeak or Skype to talk to their friends in-game. Hopefully that issue is patched up soon.Most longtime Discord users have a similar origin story. It has already happened to me a few times over a week, usually while a friend is streaming a game. Be aware that it can and might crash your Discord client at some point, and if it does, BetterDiscord will be automatically disabled until it's repaired or uninstalled through BetterDiscord's installer (keep that file around just in case). That said, if you're only installing little quality-of-life features and themes, I don't think you have much to fear. That risk apparently runs higher if you're in partnered Discord servers in which moderators are required to report users with modifications installed. Modifying Discord is against the company's Terms of Service and could technically get your account banned.
BetterDiscord claims that every plugin and theme in its library is checked for malicious code, but be careful about what you download. Make sure all required plugins are toggled on to avoid conflicts.Ī quick warning: BetterDiscord should only be used at your own risk. When this happens, popup should appear when installing the initial plugin that allows you to instantly acquire the other needed tools. In some cases, a plugin will need to install a secondary plugin that it needs to run correctly. This is also where you'll find options to edit or delete any installed plugin. Plugins won't activate until you toggle it on from the Plugins menu in Settings.
Drag in or paste any plugin files you download from BetterDiscord's plugin library and it'll automatically install to your Discord client. Head over to "Plugins" in User Settings and click "Open Plugins Folder" at the top. To install plugins, it's a very similar process to Themes.
